Additional Details

The Lymans were an important early missionary family in Hawaii, arriving at Hilo in 1832. Sarah Joiner Lyman's published 1830s diary is an important source on early colonization, and the family home is now operated as the Lyman Museum. Pictured here are mother Sarah Joiner Lyman and her three young sons, Henry Munson Lyman, Frederick Swartz Lyman, and infant David Brainerd Lyman.
The artist Persis Goodale Thurston (1821-1906) was a member of another pioneer Hawaii missionary family. She later attended Mount Holyoke College and married Townsend Taylor, continuing as a capable amateur artist. These silhouettes are published in The Lymans of Hilo, 1992 edition, page 211 (included with the lot, along with the 1970 edition).
